Starting at the very beginning, this offer is for the Penny Black, the world’s first ever postage stamp. These stamps were issued imperforate, meaning they had no perforations and were cut from the sheets using scissors. Consequently they commonly come with one or more margins missing. Condition is everything with these and what we are offering are ‘sound’ 4 margin examples with no obvious defects at £110 (six selections). All stamps will have a Maltese Cross (MX) postmark. This can be in red or black an example of each is illustrated. Please indicate which colour MX you want on the order form, you can of course max the discounts and order both. All four margin Penny Blacks are collectable, and all stamps supplied will be good quality and without any clips, thins or tears as is often the case. Next up is the Penny Lilac issued in 1881. This stamp was printed from 2 different dies, with Die I having 14 dots in the design in each corner segment and Die II having 16 as shown in our illustration. The Die I stamp is much scarcer as much fewer were issued. This offer comprises a mint Penny Lilac, plus a further example on cover and then both Die I and Die II in used condition. This offer concerns the 1841 2d Blue Imperforate. In the concise catalogue there are 4 shades namely SG13 Pale Blue, SG14 Blue , SG15 Deep Full Blue and SG15aa Violet Blue. The latter is very rare. This offer comprises three stamps SG13, SG14 and SG15 three different shades all good four-margin copies. These catalogue £235 in total for a price of £75 and all stamps will be in good sound condition with typical postmarks (usually duplexes) of the period. In 1847 Great Britain issued a set of three embossed stamps. In good used condition these stamps catalogue between £750 and £1000 each. What we are offering here are space-filler examples of the 6d and 1/- values which catalogue £750 and £800 respectfully in fine condition. These stamps will be ‘cut to shape’ as illustrated. This next offer is for MINT penny Red plates, the series issued between 1858 and 1879, which incorporate plate numbers within the concentric rings at the side of the stamp. In mint condition these stamps are very sought after being much less prevalent than used examples. These stamps catalogue a minimum of £18 each, with most of the plates in the £30 - £60 catalogue bracket. The 1887 Jubilee set was the last issued in the reign of Queen Victoria. What we are offering here are values to the 6d MINT in various combinations. The 1/- green of 1867 – 80, SG115 /7, exists in four different plate numbers namely 4,5,6 and 7. Unusually for Victorian stamps, these ‘generally’ exist in better than usual condition, especially plates 5 and 6 which we often see in ‘CDS’ (circular date stamp) condition. We offer plates 4,5 and 6 at £19.95 each in good used condition, or max the discounts and take all three for £57.50. This offer is a cracker. Penny red plates are a fascinating field of collecting. Most GB printed albums have a space for the whole set, and whilst we can all dream of finding a plate 77, it's the huge variety of the others that make these such fun. It sometimes requires a fair bit of detective work to identify a plate correctly. The postmark that obscures the numbers printed down the side of the stamp, on the left but not the right or vice versa, can make it an interesting challenge! We have bought a huge assorted stock of sound used examples. These catalogue a minimum of £2 each, and are largely unsorted. They have been checked for a few of the really scarce numbers, but you can be confident of finding a really good variety and the average catalogue value should be well over the minimum. We genuinely do not have the time or inclination to sift through them to sell one or two at the full price when by offering them like this we will shift thousands in one go, at a bargain price.
